Jessica Melendez focuses her practice on the health care industry. She assists health care entities such as hospitals, health systems and physician practices in operational and regulatory matters, government and internal investigations and litigation.

Ms. Melendez has a wide-range of experience in the health care industry. Prior to attending law school, Ms. Melendez received a bachelor’s degree in Health and Societies with a concentration in Health Policy and Law. She also interned for the general counsel of one of the largest hospitals in Puerto Rico. While in law school, Ms. Melendez worked in the legal department of a national health care solutions company, interned for the Office of Medicare Hearings and Appeals, and participated in a clinic which assisted indigent clients with obtaining health care benefits.

Ms. Melendez has used her previous experience to advise health care entities on regulatory matters related to privacy laws, including HIPAA, HITECH and the Florida Information Protection Act; EMTALA; Stark Law; and the Federal Anti-Kickback Statute. She reviews clients’ practices and transactions for compliance with state and federal regulations and assists with investigations and reports to governmental agencies.

Ms. Melendez also advises clients on quality, risk management, credentialing and peer review activities. She assists in drafting and revising policies and procedures, medical staff bylaws and board resolutions. In addition, Ms. Melendez represents health care entities in commercial and civil litigation matters.
